  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 23 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
  • Sprinkles for decorating

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cake batter according to the directions on the box.
  2. Divide the batter into separate bowls, one for each color you want to use.
  3. Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl and mix until you achieve the desired vibrant shade.
  4. Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
  5. Pour the colored batter into the pans, alternating between colors for a marbled effect, or pouring distinct layers for clear stripes.
  6. Bake the cakes according to the package instructions.
  7. Once baked, let the cakes cool completely in the pans before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. To make the frosting, beat the softened butter until light and fluffy.
  9. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing until well combined.
  10. Stir in the vanilla extract and milk or cream until the frosting is smooth and spreadable. Add food coloring to the frosting if desired.
  11. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting over the top.
  12. Place the second cake layer on top and spread a final layer of frosting over the entire cake.
  13. Decorate with a generous amount of sprinkles.

Notes

Be generous with the food coloring to make the colors really pop. For a smoother frosting, make sure your butter is softened well.
