- 1/2 cup whole milk (adjust for consistency)
- 2 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
- Pinch of salt (for frosting)
- 1 cup heavy cream (for hot fudge sauce)
- 1/2 cup corn syrup
- 3/4 cup dark chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for hot fudge sauce)
- 1/4 cup sugar (for hot fudge sauce)
- 1 tsp vanilla (for hot fudge sauce)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and line two 8-inch cake pans.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla. Beat until combined.
- Gradually add the hot coffee and mix until smooth; the batter will be thin.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared pans and bake for 30–35 minutes. Let them cool completely.
- In a mixing bowl, cream the softened butter until smooth. Add cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and salt.
- Mix while slowly adding the milk until fluffy and spreadable. Beat in the vanilla extract.
- In a saucepan, combine the heavy cream, corn syrup, cocoa powder, sugar, and chocolate chips. Bring to a low boil, whisking until smooth.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla. Let it cool slightly.
- Layer the cake with frosting between the two layers and cover the entire cake with frosting.
- Chill for about 20 minutes, warm the hot fudge sauce, and pour it generously over each slice.
- Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and extra hot fudge sauce.
Notes
For a more indulgent version, consider adding chocolate chips to the cake batter or experimenting with different types of chocolate for the frosting.
