Ingredients

- 2 cups sugar
- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons Dutch process cocoa (optional)
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup strong black coffee
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- Frosting of choice (e.g., Homemade Buttercream or Chocolate Frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans or one 13x9x2-inch pan.
- In a large bowl, combine the sugar, flour, cocoa(s), baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix on low until well combined.
- Add eggs, buttermilk, coffee, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes until smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes for round pans or 35-40 minutes for a rectangular pan, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.
- Frost the cake with your choice of frosting and enjoy!
Notes
For extra chocolate flavor, use a mix of cocoa types. Store in an airtight container for up to three days or refrigerate for a week.
