- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 4–5 tbsp milk or heavy cream
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Beat the mixture until smooth.
- Stir in the boiling water carefully. Divide the batter evenly between the two pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool the cakes for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
- For the frosting, beat the softened butter until creamy. Then, add the sifted powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract. Beat until the frosting is smooth.
- Assemble the cake by spreading frosting between the layers and on the top and sides. You can garnish it as you like!
Notes
Ensure ingredients are at room temperature before mixing. Don’t overmix the batter for a fluffy texture. Let cakes cool completely before frosting.
