A decadent rich chocolate cake topped with shiny chocolate frosting, perfect for any special occasion.

- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Dark chocolate chunks (about 1/2 cup) (optional)
- Chocolate shavings (optional)
- Cocoa powder (for dusting)
- Chocolate bars (for decoration)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth.
- Slowly add the boiling water to the batter, mixing well.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto racks to cool completely.
- For the frosting, melt the butter in a saucepan, then stir in the cocoa powder until smooth.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with milk, until the mixture is smooth. Add vanilla and a pinch of salt.
- Frost the top of one cake layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.
- Garnish with dark chocolate chunks, chocolate shavings, and a dusting of cocoa powder.
- Slice and serve!
Notes
Make sure ingredients are at room temperature for a smoother batter. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for up to a week.
