A delightful twist on classic cinnamon rolls combining rich cocoa flavor with the bright hue of red velvet, topped with cream cheese icing.

- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg

- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (for filling)
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for filling)
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened (for icing)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (for icing)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for icing)
- 2–3 tablespoons milk (adjust for icing consistency)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Add sugar, egg, melted butter, and red food coloring; mix until combined.
- In another bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, and salt; gradually add to wet mixture until soft dough forms.
- Knead on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth, or use a stand mixer for 5 minutes.
- Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
- For the filling, mix softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl.
- Roll out the dough into a rectangle (14×9 inches), spread filling evenly, and roll tightly from the long edge. Cut into 9-12 pieces.
- Place rolls in a greased pan, cover, and let rise for 30-45 minutes until puffed.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden.
- For the cream cheese icing, beat together cream cheese and butter until smooth, then add powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk to desired consistency.
- Spread icing over warm rolls and serve immediately.
Notes
Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze rolls for up to 2 months.
