- 1 1/2 cups warm water (around 110°F/43°C)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
- Extra flour for dusting
- 1 tablespoon butter (for brushing after baking)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let sit for 5–10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a rough dough forms.
- Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rest for 10 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Shape the dough into a loaf and place it on a parchment-lined baking tray. Dust with flour and score the top. Place an empty baking dish in the oven and pour in hot water to create steam. Bake for 20–22 minutes until golden brown.
- Brush the baked bread with melted butter and let it cool slightly before slicing.
Notes
Ensure the water is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast. Knead the dough well for optimal texture. Steam in the oven is essential for a nice crust.
