Ingredients

  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp purple food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder in a large bowl.
  3. Whisk buttermilk, eggs, purple food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar in another bowl.
  4. Beat softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (4-5 minutes).
  5. Alternately add dry and wet ingredients into the butter mixture until just combined.
  6. Divide the batter between prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  7. Cool cakes for 10 minutes in the pans, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth, then gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, and salt.
  9. Spread frosting on the first layer, stack the second layer, and frost the entire cake.
  10. Slice and serve, optionally decorating with edible flowers or purple sprinkles.

Notes

Use gel food coloring for a more vibrant color. Ensure ingredients are at room temperature for better mixing.
