Description
A delightful twist on classic German chocolate cake with layers of coconut and pecan frosting soaked into the cake for a rich flavor.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 box German chocolate cake mix
- Ingredients required on the cake mix box (eggs, oil, water)
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 1 cup shredded coconut
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 3 large egg yolks
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups shredded coconut
- 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
Instructions
- Bake the German chocolate cake according to the instructions on the box in a 9×13-inch pan. Once baked, let it cool for 10 minutes.
- Using the back of a wooden spoon, poke holes all over the cake.
- In a bowl, mix the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, 1 cup of shredded coconut, and 1 cup of chopped pecans. Pour this mixture over the cake, making sure it fills the holes. Let it sit for 30 minutes to soak.
- In a saucepan, whisk together the heavy cream, sugar, egg yolks, and butter over medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture thickens (about 10-12 minutes).
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract, remaining shredded coconut, and chopped pecans. Let the frosting cool for 15 minutes.
- Spread the frosting over the cake, covering the top evenly.
- Refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours before serving.
Notes
For added flavor, try toasting the shredded coconut lightly before using it. It’s best to enjoy the cake within 3-4 days.
