- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp white vinegar
- 1/2 cup hot water
- 2 tbsp black food coloring (optional)
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp heavy cream
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, combine the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and vinegar.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Slowly pour in the hot water and black food coloring (if using), mixing until smooth.
- Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.
- For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until fluffy. Then add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and heavy cream.
- Once the cakes are cool, frost with the cream cheese frosting and decorate as desired.
Notes
Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature. You can substitute buttermilk or add espresso powder for a twist.
