- 4 bratwurst sausages
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp butter
- 12 oz lager or pale ale
- 1 tbsp brown sugar (optional, for sweeter onions)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Buns and mustard (optional, for serving)
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a cast iron skillet over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and cook until soft and golden, about 10–15 minutes.
- If desired, add the brown sugar for sweeter onions.
- Pour in the beer and bring it to a simmer.
- Add the bratwurst sausages and cook uncovered for about 10–12 minutes, turning occasionally.
- Transfer the brats to a grill or grill pan and cook until browned and grill-marked, about 3–5 minutes per side.
- Serve the brats on buns or straight from the skillet with the onions spooned over the top.
Notes
Cook onions slowly for best results; experiment with different beers and add spices if desired.
