Homemade Chocolate Ice Cream

Description

A rich and creamy homemade chocolate ice cream perfect for warm days and special occasions.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate (chopped or chips)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Add milk and heavy cream, then heat over medium, stirring occasionally until warm. Remove from heat.
  2. In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Slowly pour in some of the warm mixture to temper the yolks while whisking constantly. Gradually add the rest of the warm mixture, continuing to whisk.
  3. Return the egg mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens (about 5-7 minutes). Make sure it doesn’t boil.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in chopped chocolate until it melts and is fully incorporated. Then add the vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the custard into a bowl and let it cool to room temperature. Once cool, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  6. If you have an ice cream maker, pour the mixture in and churn according to the instructions. If you don’t, pour it into a shallow container, cover, and freeze. Stir every 30 minutes for 3-4 hours until it’s creamy and firm.
  7. Once set, scoop the ice cream into bowls or cones and enjoy!

Notes

Use high-quality cocoa powder and chocolate for the best flavor. If the ice cream is too hard, let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before scooping.
