Description
A rich and creamy homemade chocolate ice cream perfect for warm days and special occasions.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate (chopped or chips)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, whisk together cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Add milk and heavy cream, then heat over medium, stirring occasionally until warm. Remove from heat.
- In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Slowly pour in some of the warm mixture to temper the yolks while whisking constantly. Gradually add the rest of the warm mixture, continuing to whisk.
- Return the egg mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens (about 5-7 minutes). Make sure it doesn’t boil.
- Remove from heat and stir in chopped chocolate until it melts and is fully incorporated. Then add the vanilla extract.
- Pour the custard into a bowl and let it cool to room temperature. Once cool, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- If you have an ice cream maker, pour the mixture in and churn according to the instructions. If you don’t, pour it into a shallow container, cover, and freeze. Stir every 30 minutes for 3-4 hours until it’s creamy and firm.
- Once set, scoop the ice cream into bowls or cones and enjoy!
Notes
Use high-quality cocoa powder and chocolate for the best flavor. If the ice cream is too hard, let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before scooping.
