- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup whole milk (for frosting, more if needed)
- 2 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
- A pinch of salt (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth. Gradually add the boiling water (the batter will be thin, but that’s normal).
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- In a medium bowl, beat the softened butter and cocoa powder until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, and salt. Continue to beat until smooth and fluffy. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk if needed.
- Once the cakes are completely cooled, spread a layer of frosting on top of one cake. Place the second cake on top and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.
- Slice, serve, and enjoy the deliciously moist chocolate cake with rich, creamy frosting!
Notes
For an extra decadent touch, sprinkle chocolate shavings or chips on top. Use room temperature ingredients for best results.
