A classic homemade chocolate cake that is rich, moist, and perfect for any occasion.

- 1 3⁄4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1⁄2 cups granulated sugar
- 3⁄4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1⁄2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1⁄2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- For the Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 1⁄2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 4–6 tbsp heavy cream or milk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
- In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until everything is blended.
- Gradually add the boiling water to the batter and stir until smooth.
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat the softened butter until creamy. Sift in the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, then mix with vanilla extract and cream or milk until smooth.
- Once the cakes are cool, frost the top of one layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides. Decorate as you wish.
Notes
Use room temperature ingredients for better mixing. Don’t overmix the batter, and check for doneness with a toothpick.
