Description

Delightful and versatile flatbread with a pocket-like shape, perfect for sandwiches, wraps, or served with dips.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  3. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C).
  7. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.
  8. Bake the pita for 5-7 minutes until they puff up and lightly brown.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Store pita bread in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for longer preservation. Adding spices like oregano or garlic powder can enhance flavor.
