Description

French Onion Soup Burgers combine all the delicious flavors of classic French onion soup into a hearty burger with sweet, caramelized onions, melted cheese, and juicy beef patties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 4 slices Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (optional for garlic butter buns)
  • Additional butter for buns

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add sliced onions and sugar. Cook and stir occasionally until the onions are deep brown and sweet (about 20-25 minutes). If the onions start to stick, deglaze the pan with beef broth.
  2. In a bowl, mix the ground beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Form the mixture into 4 patties.
  3. Grill or cook the patties in a separate skillet to your desired doneness.
  4. If you like, mix butter and minced garlic. Spread this mixture on the hamburger buns and toast them until they are golden brown.
  5. Place each burger patty on the bottom half of a bun. Top with caramelized onions, a slice of cheese, and broil until the cheese melts and bubbles.
  6. Sprinkle fresh thyme on top, add the bun tops, and serve immediately.

Notes

Take your time with the onions for the best flavor. Don’t skip the Worcestershire sauce, and feel free to experiment with different cheeses.
