Description

A classic dessert with a rich, creamy texture and smooth caramel topping that’s easy to make at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • Pinch of salt
  • 6 tbsp sugar (for caramelizing)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Caramel: In a saucepan over medium-low heat, mix 6 tablespoons of sugar and 1/3 cup of water. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Let it caramelize without stirring, swirling the pan occasionally. When golden, pour it into ramekins or molds to coat the base and set aside.
  2. Make the Custard: In a blender, combine eggs, sugar, vanilla essence, and pinch of salt. Blend for a few seconds. Add milk and blend until smooth, being careful not to over-blend. Strain the mixture and pour it into the prepared ramekins.
  3. Bake the Flan: Preheat your oven to 320°F (160°C). Place ramekins in a baking dish and fill with hot water until halfway up the sides. Bake for 45-55 minutes until just set. Let cool and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight. Run a knife along the edges before inverting onto a plate. Serve chilled.

Notes

Flan can be garnished with fresh fruit or whipped cream. Best served chilled and stored covered in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
