- 1 3/4 cups sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Chocolate frosting (store-bought or homemade)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease three 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract into the bowl; beat until everything is combined.
- Slowly stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin, so don’t worry!
- Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
- Once baked, allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks.
- After the cakes are completely cooled, stack the layers with chocolate frosting between each. Add more frosting on top for an extra treat!
Notes
For best results, ensure all ingredients are at room temperature before mixing. Chill cake layers before frosting for easier handling.
