Ingredients

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Chocolate sprinkles for decoration
  • Chocolate curls for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract. Gradually add this mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
  4. Pour in the hot water and stir until the batter is smooth. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  5. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with heavy cream, and mix until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract.
  7. Place one cooled cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of frosting over it. Top with the second cake layer and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  8. Use remaining frosting to create swirls on top of the cake. Sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles and garnish with chocolate curls.
  9. Slice and serve immediately, or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Notes

Serve at room temperature for the best flavor. Pairs well with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
