Ingredients

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 3/4 cups sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Chocolate frosting (store-bought or homemade)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease three 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract; mix until well combined.
- Slowly stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin.
- Divide the batter between the prepared cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool the cakes in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- Once cooled, stack the layers with chocolate frosting in between and cover the top with additional frosting.
Notes
Ensure ingredients are at room temperature for best results. For more intense chocolate flavor, add cocoa powder to the frosting.
