- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
- 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup (240ml) boiling water
- 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
- 4 cups (500g) powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk (for frosting)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well. Add milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth. Gradually stir in boiling water.
- Divide the batter evenly between the pans and bake for 30-35 minutes. Let cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat the butter and cocoa powder until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and milk, and beat to the desired consistency. Stir in vanilla extract.
- To assemble, place one cake layer on a serving plate, spread frosting on top, place the second layer, and frost the top and sides. Optional decorations include sprinkling with chocolate shavings or fresh berries.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra special touch.
Notes
Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for better mixing. Do not skip the boiling water step for a moist cake.
