Description

A moist and rich chocolate cake topped with creamy chocolate buttercream, perfect for any celebration.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup melted dark chocolate (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, 3/4 cup cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk well.
  3. Add in the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix on medium speed until thoroughly combined.
  4. Slowly stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy and smooth.
  9. Gradually add the powdered sugar and remaining cocoa powder, mixing on low speed until combined.
  10. Add the salt, vanilla extract, and heavy cream. Beat on high speed for 3-4 minutes until light and fluffy.
  11. If desired, stir in the melted dark chocolate until smooth.
  12. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread chocolate buttercream on top. Add the second layer and frost the entire cake with the remaining buttercream.
  13. For decoration, pipe swirls or sprinkle chocolate shavings on top, if desired.

Notes

Store the cake at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for about a week. Cover well to retain moisture.
