Ingredients

  • 1 medium head cauliflower, cut into florets
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/2 red onion, sliced
  • 2 celery stalks, sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (optional)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp cracked black pepper
  • 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp water (slurry)

Instructions

  1. Toss cauliflower florets in cornstarch and salt until well-coated.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet or wok and fry cauliflower until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
  3. In a separate pan, sauté red onion, celery, and garlic in a splash of oil until just tender.
  4. In a small bowl, mix all sauce ingredients except the cornstarch slurry. Add to the pan and simmer. Stir in slurry to thicken.
  5. Toss in the fried cauliflower and stir to coat evenly in the sauce.
  6. Sprinkle with green onions and sesame seeds. Serve immediately.

Notes

Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying for maximum crispiness. Fry in batches if necessary.
