- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup melted unsweetened chocolate
- 1 cup unsalted butter (for frosting), softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prepare 2 (8-inch) round cake pans by greasing them.
- In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt together.
- In another bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until creamy.
- Add the eggs and vanilla extract to the butter mixture, beating well.
- Gradually add the milk and dry ingredients to the wet mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until combined.
- Divide the batter into two halves.
- In one half of the batter, stir in the cocoa powder and melted chocolate until well mixed.
- Pour alternating spoonfuls of the vanilla and chocolate batters into each prepared pan to create a zebra pattern.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- For the buttercream frosting, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and mix in the vanilla extract until well combined.
- Once the cakes are cooled, frost them as desired.

Ensure butter and eggs are at room temperature for best mixing results.
