  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup melted unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (for frosting), softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare 2 (8-inch) round cake pans by greasing them.
  3. In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt together.
  4. In another bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until creamy.
  5. Add the eggs and vanilla extract to the butter mixture, beating well.
  6. Gradually add the milk and dry ingredients to the wet mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until combined.
  7. Divide the batter into two halves.
  8. In one half of the batter, stir in the cocoa powder and melted chocolate until well mixed.
  9. Pour alternating spoonfuls of the vanilla and chocolate batters into each prepared pan to create a zebra pattern.
  10. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  11. For the buttercream frosting, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and mix in the vanilla extract until well combined.
  12. Once the cakes are cooled, frost them as desired.
