- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water
- Zest of 1 large orange
- 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2–3 tbsp fresh orange juice (adjust to taste)

- Chocolate shavings (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- Add eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, orange zest, and orange juice to the dry ingredients. Beat until smooth. Gradually stir in hot water and mix until the batter is well combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the two cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, beating until combined. Slowly add orange juice to the frosting, adjusting the consistency to be light and fluffy.
- Place one cooled cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of chocolate orange frosting on top. Add the second cake layer and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
- Decorate the cake with orange slices and chocolate shavings for a beautiful finishing touch.
