- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour an 8-inch round cake pan.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- Cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy in a large mixing bowl.
- Beat in eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla extract.
- Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture, alternating with buttermilk, and mix until just combined.
- Pour batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool completely.
- In a heatproof bowl, melt the chopped chocolate and butter over simmering water until smooth. Let cool slightly.
- Beat egg whites in a separate bowl until soft peaks form, then gradually add sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form.
- Stir egg yolks into the cooled chocolate mixture.
- Gently fold the whipped egg whites into the chocolate mixture.
- In another bowl, whip heavy cream and vanilla extract until soft peaks form, then fold into chocolate mixture.
- Once the cake has cooled, slice it in half horizontally.
- Spread half of the mousse over the first layer, top with the second layer, and spread remaining mousse on top.
- Refrigerate for at least 4 hours until mousse is set.
- Garnish with whipped cream and chocolate shavings before serving.
