Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup chocolate ganache (for lava filling)
  • 1 cup butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 23 tbsp milk (for frosting)
  • Chocolate shavings (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth. Gradually stir in boiling water until the batter is thin but well combined.
  4. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  5. Heat 1 cup of heavy cream until simmering. Pour over 8 oz of chopped chocolate or chocolate chips. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then stir until smooth. Let it cool until thickened.
  6. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing until combined. Add milk to achieve a fluffy, spreadable frosting.
  7. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Create a small well in the center and fill it with the chocolate ganache. Top with the second cake layer.
  8. Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
  9. Decorate with chocolate shavings for an extra touch of indulgence.
