- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup chocolate ganache (for lava filling)
- 1 cup butter, softened (for frosting)
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
- 2–3 tbsp milk (for frosting)
- Chocolate shavings (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth. Gradually stir in boiling water until well combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
- For the ganache, heat heavy cream until simmering and pour over chopped chocolate. Stir until smooth and cool until thickened.
- For the frosting, beat softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Mix in milk until fluffy.
- Assemble the cake by placing one layer on a serving plate, creating a well for the ganache, and topping with the second layer.
- Frost the top and sides of the cake with remaining frosting and decorate with chocolate shavings.
- Slice, serve, and enjoy!
Notes
Use high-quality chocolate for the ganache for best flavor. Make sure the ingredients are at room temperature for better mixing.
