Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened, for frosting)
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line three 8-inch cake pans with parchment paper.
  2. In one bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients with the buttermilk, starting and ending with the dry mix.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes. Allow the cakes to cool completely.
  6. In a clean bowl, beat 1 cup of softened butter until creamy.
  7. Gradually add in the powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Pour in the heavy cream and vanilla extract, beating until smooth and fluffy.
  8. Take the cooled cake layers and spread a layer of fudge frosting between each layer. Once stacked, spread frosting over the top and sides of the entire cake.
  9. For decoration, drizzle melted chocolate over the top and sprinkle chocolate shavings.
  10. Serve slices and enjoy!

Notes

Ensure all your ingredients are at room temperature for the best mixing results. Don’t overmix the batter for a light and fluffy cake.
