- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup hot water
- 1 cup cherry pie filling (or fresh cherries, pitted and halved)
- 1/4 cup cherry syrup or juice (optional)
- 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
- 3 tbsp powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Shaved chocolate or chocolate curls (optional garnish)

Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line the bottom of a 9-inch round cake pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Add the vegetable oil, vanilla, buttermilk, and hot water. Mix until smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let it cool completely.
- In a chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
- Spread the cherry filling over the cooled chocolate cake. Drizzle with cherry syrup if desired.
- Top with whipped cream, spreading it evenly across the top.
- Garnish with shaved chocolate or curls and add fresh cherries for decoration.
- Chill for 1 hour before serving for the best results.
