A delicious comfort food classic featuring crispy beef cube steaks, creamy mashed potatoes, and rich gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 beef cube steaks
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Oil for frying
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes
  • 1 cup chicken or beef gravy
  • 2 cups peas and carrots

Instructions

  1. Tenderize the beef cube steaks with a mallet and season with salt and pepper.
  2. In a bowl, combine flour and paprika.
  3. In another bowl, mix eggs and buttermilk.
  4. Dredge each steak in flour, dip in the egg mixture, then coat with flour again.
  5. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat, and fry the steaks until golden brown on both sides.
  6. For the mashed potatoes, boil peeled potatoes until tender, then mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper.
  7. Prepare gravy using pan drippings or premade gravy.
  8. Steam or boil peas and carrots until tender.
  9. Serve chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy, along with peas and carrots.

Notes

For better flavor, marinate the beef in buttermilk for a few hours or overnight. Ensure oil is hot before frying for a crispy crust.
