Ingredients

  • 1 pound of vanilla sponge cake or ladyfingers, cut into cubes
  • 1/2 cup cherry juice or cherry liqueur (optional)
  • 3 cups cherry pie filling
  • 1 cup fresh or canned cherries (optional)
  • 3 cups prepared vanilla custard, cooled
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp almond or vanilla extract
  • Fresh cherries (for garnish)
  • Chocolate shavings or slivered almonds (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a trifle dish or large glass bowl, arrange half the sponge cake cubes at the bottom.
  2. Drizzle with cherry juice or liqueur, if desired.
  3. Layer half of the cherry pie filling over the cake.
  4. Add a few fresh cherries if using for extra texture.
  5. Spread half the vanilla custard over the cherry layer, smoothing it evenly.
  6. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and extract until stiff peaks form.
  7. Spread half the whipped cream over the custard.
  8. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients: cake, cherry pie filling, custard, and whipped cream.
  9. Garnish the top layer with fresh cherries, chocolate shavings, or slivered almonds for a festive touch.
  10. Cover and chill the trifle in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

For a lighter version, you can use low-fat whipped cream or yogurt. Store leftover trifle in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
