Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 4 slices sourdough or Texas toast
  • 4 slices Swiss or provolone cheese
  • 2 slices American cheese (optional, for extra melt)
  • 2 tbsp butter (for grilling)
  • 1 tbsp mayo (optional, for spreading on bread)

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Add the chopped onions, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook until the beef is fully done and the onions are caramelized.
  2. Butter one side of each slice of bread. Place the buttered side down in a skillet. Add a slice of Swiss or provolone cheese, a scoop of the hot beef mixture, and (if desired) a slice of American cheese. Top with another slice of bread, keeping the buttered side up.
  3. Heat your skillet or griddle over medium heat. Grill each sandwich for about 3–4 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melty.
  4. After grilling, let the sandwiches rest for 1–2 minutes to help set the cheese, making slicing easier.
  5. Serve hot with chips, pickles, or a fresh side salad.

Notes

For extra flavor, add diced bell peppers or mushrooms to the beef mixture. Let sandwiches rest after grilling for best results.
