Description

A delightful dessert that combines the sweetness of caramel with the crispness of apples, layered for stunning presentation and flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (207g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) water
  • 1/4 cup (56g) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp salt
  • 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 4 tbsp (56g) packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup (240ml) heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup (58g) powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup cinnamon granola (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Make the Caramel Sauce: In a medium saucepan, combine sugar and water. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves (3-5 minutes). Add the butter and let it melt. Increase the heat to medium and bring to a boil. Stop stirring and let it boil until it turns a deep golden color (10-15 minutes). Occasionally swirl the pan for even cooking. Remove from heat and slowly add heavy cream while whisking. Allow caramel to cool to room temperature.
  2. Prepare the Cinnamon Apples: In a medium pan, combine apples, lemon juice, nutmeg, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Stir and cook over medium-low heat for 10-15 minutes until apples soften. Let cool.
  3. Make the Cinnamon Whipped Cream: In a large bowl, beat heavy cream, powdered sugar, and cinnamon on high speed until stiff peaks form.
  4. Assemble the Trifles: Layer whipped cream, granola, caramel sauce, and cinnamon apples in serving glasses. Repeat the layers and let the trifles set in the fridge for 2-3 hours before serving.

Notes

Make the caramel ahead of time for easier prep. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 2 days.
