Description
A delightful dessert combining warm flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg, and the sweetness of caramel and fresh apples, perfect for fall gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup applesauce
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup milk
- 3 cups chopped apples
- 2 cups unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
- 2 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce (for frosting)
- 2 tsp cinnamon (for frosting)
- 3 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare three 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and spices.
- In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter, vegetable oil, and granulated sugar until fluffy.
- Mix in the applesauce, then add the eggs one at a time, stirring in the vanilla extract.
- Alternate mixing the dry ingredients and milk until everything is combined. Fold in the chopped apples.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- For the caramel buttercream, beat the softened butter until creamy. Add in the vanilla extract, caramel sauce, cinnamon, and gradually mix in the powdered sugar.
- Layer the cakes with frosting in between and on top. Finish with a drizzle of caramel sauce.
Notes
Allow cakes to cool completely before frosting to avoid melting the frosting. Use a variety of apples for a mix of flavors and textures.
