  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 cups chopped apples
  • 2 cups unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (for frosting)
  • 2 tsp cinnamon (for frosting)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and spices.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter, vegetable oil, and granulated sugar until fluffy.
  4. Mix in the applesauce, then add the eggs one at a time, stirring in the vanilla extract.
  5. Alternate mixing the dry ingredients and milk until everything is combined. Fold in the chopped apples.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. For the caramel buttercream, beat the softened butter until creamy. Add in the vanilla extract, caramel sauce, cinnamon, and gradually mix in the powdered sugar.
  8. Layer the cakes with frosting in between and on top. Finish with a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Notes

Allow cakes to cool completely before frosting to avoid melting the frosting. Use a variety of apples for a mix of flavors and textures.
