Description
A delightful breakfast dish combining sweet blueberries and creamy cheese, baked into fluffy French bread.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf French bread (or Texas Toast)
- 8 eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (or half and half)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 8 oz cream cheese, cut into 16 pieces
- 1 pint blueberries, washed and dried
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small squares
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly spray a 9×13-inch pan with cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cut the bread into 3/4 – 1-inch cubes and toss them in the egg mixture until well coated.
- Pour half of the bread and egg mixture into the pan. Add half of the cream cheese and blueberries. Pour the remaining bread mixture on top and finish with the remaining cream cheese and blueberries.
- In a small bowl or food processor, combine flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add butter and use a fork or pulse in a food processor until the mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle this topping evenly over the French toast bake.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden and crispy and the center is no longer wet.
Notes
For best results, use day-old bread. You can also prepare the dish the night before and bake it in the morning.
