Description

A delicious German dessert combining rich chocolate cake, sweet cherry filling, and fluffy whipped cream, perfect for celebrations.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 can cherry pie filling
  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate shavings

Instructions

  1. Set the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and mix well.
  4. Gradually stir in the boiling water until well combined — note that the batter will be thin.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pans and place in the oven for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread cherry pie filling over the top.
  8. Add the second layer on top, then cover the entire cake with whipped cream, ensuring all sides are covered.
  9. Garnish with chocolate shavings and additional cherry pie filling, if desired.
  10. Chill the cake for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Serve chilled. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
