Description
A classic German dessert featuring rich chocolate layers and sweet cherry topping, all adorned with fluffy whipped cream.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 can cherry pie filling
- Whipped cream
- Chocolate shavings
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.
- Stir in the boiling water slowly until the batter becomes smooth. The batter will be thin but that’s okay!
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once the cakes are cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread the cherry pie filling evenly over the top.
- Place the second cake layer on top, then cover the entire cake with whipped cream, making sure to frost the top and sides generously.
- Garnish the cake with chocolate shavings and extra cherry pie filling for a beautiful finish.
- Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving to let all the flavors meld together. Enjoy!
Notes
Serve chilled for the best flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.
