A classic German dessert featuring rich chocolate cake layers, juicy cherries, and fluffy whipped cream, perfect for celebrations.

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 can cherry pie filling
- Whipped cream for decoration
- Chocolate shavings for decoration
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla to the dry mixture and mix well.
- Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth.
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once cooled, place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread cherry pie filling on top and add a layer of whipped cream.
- Place the second cake layer on top and frost the cake with more whipped cream.
- Decorate with chocolate shavings and cherries.
- Chill the cake before serving for the best flavor.
Notes
For better mixing, make sure all ingredients are at room temperature. If desired, add a splash of Kirsch to the whipped cream for an adult version.
