Description

A classic German dessert featuring rich chocolate cake layers, juicy cherries, and fluffy whipped cream, perfect for celebrations.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 can cherry pie filling
  • Whipped cream for decoration
  • Chocolate shavings for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla to the dry mixture and mix well.
  4. Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Once cooled, place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread cherry pie filling on top and add a layer of whipped cream.
  9. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the cake with more whipped cream.
  10. Decorate with chocolate shavings and cherries.
  11. Chill the cake before serving for the best flavor.

Notes

For better mixing, make sure all ingredients are at room temperature. If desired, add a splash of Kirsch to the whipped cream for an adult version.
