Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Black food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth. Gradually mix this into the dry ingredients.
  4. Slowly stir in the boiling water until combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool for 10 minutes.
  6. Beat the butter until creamy. Add cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with heavy cream, until smooth. Mix in vanilla extract and black food coloring if desired.
  7. Once the cakes are completely cool, spread a layer of icing over one cake, stack the second cake on top, and frost the entire cake with the black velvet icing.
  8. Slice and serve to enjoy!

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-5 days. You can freeze slices for later enjoyment.
