Description

A delightful butterfly-shaped cake that’s perfect for any celebration, fun to make and decorate.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 boxes of white cake mix
  • 2 containers of vanilla frosting
  • Assorted food coloring (pink, blue, yellow, orange, and green)
  • Powdered sugar
  • Small candy decorations (optional)
  • Fondant for butterfly wings (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cake mix according to the package directions to make two 9-inch round cakes.
  2. Let the cakes cool completely on a wire rack.
  3. Once cool, use a serrated knife to cut each cake into a half-circle shape.
  4. Arrange the four pieces on a serving platter to form the shape of a butterfly with two top wings and two bottom wings.
  5. Prepare the frosting by dividing it into five bowls. Leave one bowl white.
  6. Use food coloring to tint the remaining bowls with pink, blue, yellow, orange, and green.
  7. Apply a thin layer of white frosting over the entire cake to create a crumb coat. Refrigerate for 20 minutes to set.
  8. Apply a final layer of white frosting to the entire cake.
  9. Use a piping bag with a round tip to create small flower shapes with the different colored frostings.
  10. Create a long body down the center of the butterfly with the white frosting.
  11. Use a smaller tip to pipe a border around the edges of the wings.
  12. If desired, create and decorate fondant wings to place on top of the cake.
  13. Sprinkle the cake with powdered sugar and any other decorations you like.

Notes

Ensure cakes are completely cool before cutting to prevent crumbling. Experiment with food colorings for vibrant designs.
