- 2 boxes of white cake mix
- 2 containers of vanilla frosting
- Assorted food coloring (pink, blue, yellow, orange, and green)
- Powdered sugar
- Small candy decorations (optional)
- Fondant for butterfly wings (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the cake mix according to the package directions to make two 9-inch round cakes.
- Let the cakes cool completely on a wire rack.
- Once cool, use a serrated knife to cut each cake into a half-circle shape. Arrange the four pieces on a serving platter to form the shape of a butterfly with two top and two bottom wings.
- Prepare the frosting. Divide the frosting into five bowls. Leave one bowl white. Use food coloring to tint the remaining bowls with pink, blue, yellow, orange, and green.
- Apply a thin layer of white frosting over the entire cake to create a crumb coat. Refrigerate for 20 minutes to set.
- Apply a final layer of white frosting to the entire cake.
- Use a piping bag with a round tip to create small flower shapes with the different colored frostings. Create a long body down the center of the butterfly with the white frosting. Use a smaller tip to pipe a border around the edges of the wings.
- If desired, create and decorate fondant wings to place on top of the cake.
- Sprinkle the cake with powdered sugar and any other decorations.
Notes
Make sure the cakes are completely cool before cutting to prevent crumbling. Use gel food coloring for brighter colors.
